Training

Discrimination is a tricky subject. In our experience, not many people like to think of themselves as discriminators, or even potential discriminators. Our courses challenge people to think for themselves, and perhaps to think differently about their attitudes and experiences

This has to be honestly done, so we offer a safe, non-judgemental environment in which participants in our training courses can explore all aspects of discrimination and their own prejudices.

Everyone has prejudices of one kind or another. Some of these can be fairly harmless, but some of them lead to discriminatory even damaging behaviour. We discuss where our prejudices come from and which ones can lead to discrimination that is against the law.

The course includes:

  • short film materials to demonstrate some of the ways in which
       discrimination happens;
  • examination of some cases in law to give an understanding of how
       discriminatory behaviours can be challenged;
  • discussion of the notion of ‘political correctness’ and how it has been
       hijacked by those with no interest in cultural sensitivity;
  • role models from history.

    We do not provide participants with rule books. Inclusion21 works on the basis that if training is to be successful, participants must ‘own’ the issues and commit themselves to thinking and learning about these matters after the course is finished.

    No short training course can provide all the answers. We aim to create the conditions in which participants can, in a secure setting, discuss openly the ways in which discrimination arises. We then try to equip them with the skills to avoid such behaviours in every situation in which they might find themselves, work, leisure, community relations.

    And we believe that learning should not always take a heavy, brow-beating approach. Serious messages can sometimes be better absorbed given a more relaxed and sometimes fun delivery style.

    "The content was excellent. Everybody is very happy with the course. And for me it was also the safest I've ever felt in a training session of this kind."
